Amertha Villas in Bali.

The huge beachfront pool at Amertha Villas features a scenic mountain backdrop, sea views, private cabanas, and a shallow area for kids.

Amertha Villas – Spacious, with a traditional design and lush tropical setting.

With extensive beach frontage and a stunning mountain backdrop, this resort has one of the most expansive grounds in Bali. One and two-bedroom villas feature private pools, open-air kitchen/living/dining areas, charming gardens, faultless Balinese-style design, and modern furnishings, though they are not entirely private. Within each villa, some self-contained suites can be booked separately. More secluded suites are located within a two-story building and come with kitchenettes. The beach is grey, as is typical in the area, but immaculately maintained, and the vast gardens are dotted with traditional statues and fountains. The massive pool is framed by palms and faces the scenic coastline. The resort is away from the busy road and has a better selection of cafés nearby than rival resorts.

Amertha Villas – The Location

  • Area: Faces the beach, with only a handful of places to eat, drink, and shop within walking distance.
  • Address: On the main road, Jl. Singaraja-Gilimanuk, midway along Pemuteran, an area that stretches several kilometers across the remote northwest coast of Bali.
  • How to Get There: No metered taxis or chartered cars from the airport will come this far (4-5 hours) and there are no direct shuttle buses or any public transport of much use to tourists. The only option is to arrange transfers through the hotel. Ferries from Java arrive every few minutes at Gilimanuk. From there, take a bus towards Singaraja and get off after about 45 minutes.

Amertha Villas – The Basics

  • Guests: Caters well for all, especially small groups and families.
  • Beach: The sand is grey and gritty, which is typical of this area. However, the beach is cleaner than elsewhere, with no boats spoiling the views. Great for sunsets and walks, but less appealing for swimming and sunbathing.
  • Views: Only 3 villas offer unobstructed sea views; all other accommodations face the gardens and/or mountains.
  • Kitchen: Villas contain open-air kitchen/dining areas, suites feature smaller kitchenettes.
  • Private Pools/Jacuzzis: Villas have private pools. Guests who book a self-contained suite within a villa will share the pool with other suites within the same villa.
  • Parking: There’s plenty of free and secure parking at the front, but think long and hard before driving anywhere in Bali.
  • How to Book: Booking.com will have the best rates.

  • Room Service: Available from about 7 am to 10 pm.

Amertha Villas – Rooms

  • Room Types: Ocean Front Suite • Mountain & Garden View Suite • Ocean Front Villa • Mountain & Garden View Villa • List of all Rooms

If booking a self-contained suite within a villa, be aware that the pool and kitchen may be used by guests in other suites within that villa.

  • Smoking Rooms: Smoking is not allowed in the rooms but is permitted anywhere else in the resort.
  • Best Room: Ocean Front Villas are very spacious, each featuring a private pool and extensive open-air area with a kitchen, dining table, and lounge room.
  • For Families: Suites can fit in extra single beds. Villas have enough bedrooms to sleep up to 10, as well as private pools and kitchen/living/dining areas.

Amertha Villas – Local Transport

  • Walking & Cycling: Pemuteran is several kilometers long and the limited facilities are spread out, so expect to do a lot of walking. The road is flat and wide, although busy, and reasonable for cycling. The resort offers rental of bikes.
  • Public Transport: Decrepit buses and bemos (minivans) ply the main road, linking all places within Pemuteran and connecting Pemuteran with Lovina, Pura Pulaki temple, and the turnoff to Banjar (see later).
  • Shuttle Buses: No tourist shuttle buses venture this far. They do travel to Lovina, from where it’s easy enough to catch a bus or bemo to Pemuteran.
  • Cars, Motorbikes, & Taxis: There are no metered taxis, so charter a car with a driver for trips outside the region. A few local agencies rent motorbikes (which are a terrific way to explore the north coast) and cars (but driving anywhere in Bali is not recommended).

Amertha Villas – What’s Nearby?

Best Nearby Restaurants & Bars

The choice within walking distance is better than most other resorts. These places are clustered around the roadside entrance to the Amertha.

  • Waroeng Hungry Army – Pizzas, burgers, and seafood at inexpensive prices. Also, cooking classes.
  • The Prana – Traditional décor and extensive menu.
  • Warung Ganesh – Inviting décor, tasty and well-priced meals, and tables away from the noisy road.

Nearby Shops

  • There’s a minimart opposite the resort entrance, but few other shopping choices anywhere in Pemuteran.

Attractions

  • Pulau Menjangan – Part of a national park, this uninhabited island offers world-class snorkeling/diving and rugged hiking. Organize a day trip through the hotel.
  • Diving – Arguably some of the finest diving in Bali is along the coast nearby. A few agencies in Pemuteran can arrange trips, including Bali Diving Academy at the Adi Assri Resort, about 600m to the east.
  • Pura Pulaki (3 km) – Extraordinary beachside temple full of monkeys that actually swim. Close enough to cycle.

Useful (but decrepit) public transport can be used to reach:

  • Banjar (40 km) – Delightful village with fantastic hot springs and Bali’s largest monastery. From the turn-off, take a motorbike taxi. The walk down (3 km) to the main road from either place is very pleasant.
  • Lovina (45 km) – More developed tourist region but also with a grey beach.
  • Singaraja (55 km) – Bali’s second city boasts a crumbling colonial-era harbor and mildly-interesting museums.
